Alimony for men

I came across this article on the Wall Street Journal that discusses male alimony. This is not as common as female alimony for very familiar reasons. It was interesting to read about men's and women's views on alimony.
Something that really bothered me was the fact that in not one of this cases did the men have custody of the children and in most cases where women's alimony is discussed they have custody of the children.
One of the men in fact was talking about how he deserved the alimony payments to take care of his car collection. Children and cars, not the same thing.

Anyhow, I strongly believe that men and women should be treated equally and alimony should be treated fairly for either sex.

Alimony is not child support. They are two separate concepts. Alimony is paid in order to keep the standard of living for the ex-spouse up to the same level as during the marriage. Child support is money paid with the sole purpose of helping raise the children. Alimony is taxed as income by the IRS, child support is not considered income at all.

So, yes, children and cars are not the same thing, which is why there are two different types of payments to take care of each - alimony and child support. Paying an ex-husband alimony to take care of his car collection could be entirely appropriate, given the correct financial situation during the marriage. On the other hand, by definition, child support is not ever paid to an ex-spouse who does not have custody of the children.

Alimony is "treated fairly for either sex."

Well, I don't think it is a surprise to anyone that in most cases than not, alimony is hidden in child support because the spouses will not agree to pay a realistic alimony fee. Hence, when you talk about alimony in women it is usually unseparable from child support.
